About this training

Join us in Devonport, in the Northwest region of Tasmania, for face-to-face prevention training.

Learn the foundations on day one, with an introduction to the Change the story framework. Days 2 and 3 provide an opportunity to deepen and extend on your efforts at putting prevention into action and to reflect on the foundational elements of good primary prevention. It's possible to attend just the first day, or all 3 days.

If you have previously attended a full-day Change the story training with Our Watch, please contact training@ourwatch.org.au to discuss the best option for your participation.

Catering will be provided as part of this training.

Prerequisites

Learners wishing to undertake Deepening the change will need to have either completed the introductory full day workshop, Change starts with us or have an intermediate-level knowledge of Change the story: A shared framework for preventing violence against women in Australia.

Learners wishing to undertake day 2 of Deepening the change, 'Design', will be required to have undertaken day one, 'Principles'.

Day 1

Change starts with us: A full-day primary prevention workshop

9:30am-4:30pm AEST, Tuesday 19 March

This workshop aims to support people who are new to the primary prevention of violence against women. It provides the introductory skills and knowledge to implement Change the story. This training is suitable for people who are entering or new to the prevention sector, or who are looking to understand the national evidence base.

This training covers:

  • the link between violence against women and gender inequality
  • key components of the Change the story framework, including the drivers of violence against women, gendered norms, practices and structures and elements of an intersectional approach
  • the essential ingredients for prevention practice: prevention techniques, the socioecological model and essential actions
  • the 5 guiding principles for addressing masculinities and working with men and boys in prevention
  • evidence-based frameworks and resources to support primary prevention practice.

Days 2 and 3

Deepening in the change: 2 full-day primary prevention workshops

9:30am-4:30pm AEST, Wednesday 20 May (Principles)
9:30am-4:30pm AEST, Thursday 21 May (Design)

Primary prevention is a long-term, transformative change process. This workshop has been designed to support practitioners who are actively engaged in primary prevention work. It also covers prevention topics that can be tricky to navigate, offering tips and techniques for practice. Participants will leave with a range of tools, practical frameworks and more confidence to engage in primary prevention change work.

Day 2, Principles, covers key elements of practice that prevention professionals often experience in the course of their work:

  • gender transformative change
  • intersectionality in practice (with links to the Changing the picture and Changing the landscape frameworks)
  • working in partnership
  • working with resistance and backlash
  • addressing masculinities and working with men and boys
  • practitioner care.

Day 3, Design, provide learners with an opportunity to design a prevention initiative that addresses a complex scenario related to gender-based violence, covering:

  • audiences and big reach settings
  • essential prevention actions from Change the story framework
  • primary prevention techniques
  • communications and values-based messaging
  • how to apply a theory of change to measure impact and reach.
