About the campaign

16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence is an international campaign for the prevention and elimination of violence against women and girls.

The campaign is held annually from 25 November (International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women) to 10 December (Human Rights Day). It is supported by various global, national and local organisations, including UN Women, as part of its UNITE to End Violence against Women campaign.

This year’s theme is ‘UNiTE to End Digital Violence against All Women and Girls’.

Chats that matter

Our 16 Days of Activism activity this year focuses on helping parents and carers have conversations with young people about relationships, gender stereotypes and masculinity.

These conversations can help empower young people to feel safe and respected.

We’ll be sharing tips on social media to help parents and carers discuss respect, relationships and gender stereotypes with the young people in their lives.

We know parents want to talk about these topics but often don’t know where to start, so we're providing resources to support these important conversations. These are chats that matter.

How to start the chats that matter

It’s normal and healthy for young people to be curious about sex, dating and relationships. Talking about these things can be awkward – but the more you talk, the easier it gets.

Parents can start conversations and support their young people with guidance, role modelling and language to explore what makes relationships healthy.

Try these 3 tips for having conversations with young people about sex, dating and relationships:

  • Create a private, no-pressure place to talk
  • Remember that listening is just as important as talking
  • Keep the lines of communication open afterwards.

You don’t need to cover everything at once – but you can start talking today.
