    Overview

Changing with pride: A national framework to prevent violence against LGBTIQA+ people is Australia’s national evidence-based framework for preventing violence against LGBTIQA+ people and communities.

In Australia, LGBTIQA+ people experience disproportionate rates of violence – but this violence is not inevitable, and together we can prevent it.

    About Changing with pride

Developed in partnership by Rainbow Health Australia and Our Watch, and grounded in the leadership and lived experience of LGBTIQA+ communities, Changing with pride provides a roadmap for governments, organisations and communities to work together to create a future where all LGBTIQA+ people live free from violence.

Violence against women and violence against LGBTIQA+ people share the same underlying drivers: to prevent one, we need to prevent both. Advancing equality for LGBTIQA+ people and communities helps build a more inclusive, respectful and safe Australia for everyone.

The drivers of violence against LGBTIQA+ people are grounded in gender inequality and gendered patterns of violence, while also reflecting the ways LGBTIQA+ people are treated unequally in society.

Building safety and equality for LGBTIQA+ people requires sustained action across our institutions, workplaces, schools and communities. Lasting change happens when everyone works together to address the underlying drivers of violence and discrimination.

LGBTIQA+ organisations and communities have been central to the framework's development, drawing on their leadership, lived experience and longstanding contributions to creating safer, more inclusive communities.

The framework draws on several background papers and three consultations with LGBTIQA+ communities. This includes:

    • a national stakeholder consultation with LGBTIQA+ organisations, advocates and activists
    • a place-based community-led consultation with organisations working with Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander LGBTIQA+, Sistergirl and Brotherboy communities in the Northern Territory and Queensland.

Rigid gender norms must be addressed to prevent violence against lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex, queer and asexual (LGBTIQA+) people.
