Senior Advisor – Media and Communications

Our Watch is a national not-for-profit established in 2013 to drive nation-wide change in the structures, norms and practices that lead to violence against women and their children.

Our Watch’s vision is an Australia where women and their children live free from all forms of violence. Our mandate is to stop violence before it happens, and our purpose is to provide national leadership to prevent all forms of violence against women and their children. About the role

The Senior Advisor – Media and Communications plays a key role in delivering both proactive and reactive media and communications activity across Our Watch, to protect and enhance the organisation’s reputation, build journalists’ capacity to responsibly report on violence against women and engage the community in action to prevent violence against women and their children. 

Reporting to the Manager, Media and Communications and working as part of cross-functional project teams, the Senior Advisor – Media and Communications is responsible for developing, implementing and evaluating the organisation’s media and communications activity. This includes developing proactive and reactive media plans, researching and writing opinion pieces, preparing speeches and presentations, and providing communications strategies and support to cross-organisational projects. 

The Senior Advisor – Media and Communications also supports Our Watch’s National Media Engagement Program in collaboration with the Practice Leadership team. This includes contributing expertise to a range of national projects to engage the media in preventing violence against women and their children.  

This role is full-time, and based in Melbourne.

About you

We are looking for someone with tertiary qualifications in journalism, public relations or communications, with considerable experience in media and communications strategy, proactive media engagement and issues management.

You will have extensive knowledge of the Australian media landscape gained as a working journalist or media and communications professional, and a broad network of media contacts.

You will also have excellent written and verbal communication, project management and stakeholder management skills and experience.
