Vale The Honourable Fiona Richardson, Minister for Women and the Prevention of Family Violence.

August 24 2017 By Hannah Grant, Media & Ambassador Program Manager

Our Watch today paid tribute to Australia’s first Minister for Women and the Prevention of Family Violence, The Honourable Fiona Richardson.

Our Watch Chair, Natasha Stott Despoja AM, said Minister Richardson was a feisty, innovative and committed advocate for the prevention of violence against women and children.

“Our sector has lost a leader. She pioneered a ministerial role for the Prevention of Family Violence. I appreciated greatly her support for Our Watch and other organisations and groups dedicated to eliminating violence against women and children. Her personal support also meant a great deal,” said Ms Stott Despoja.

Our Watch CEO Mary Barry said that “leading the development of the state’s Prevention of Violence Against Women Taskforce, overseeing the Royal Commission into Family Violence, and creating the state's first gender-equality strategy are just a few of Minister Richardson’s accomplishments.

“She was also instrumental in the roll out of the state’s Respectful Relationship’s Education program – an essential component of best-practice prevention – and led the development of national standards for the prevention of violence against women initiatives in workplaces. The latter have been championed by the United Nations and are set to be adapted as worldwide standards,” Ms Barry said.

“Our thoughts are with Minister Richardson’s family and colleagues,” she said.
