Prevention crucial to ending violence against women - Our Watch commends Victoria's approach

November 24 2016 By Hannah Grant, Media and Ambassador Program Manager

Our Watch commends the Victorian Government’s continued focus on preventing violence against women and their children evidenced in its 10-year plan to reduce rates of family violence launched today by Victoria’s Premier, Daniel Andrews.

Our Watch CEO Mary Barry said the organisation “congratulates the Victorian Government for its comprehensive approach to reducing rates of violence against women and their children through its commitment to implement all 227 recommendations of Australia’s first royal commission into family violence.”
“If we are to stop violence against women and their children before it starts we must tackle what the evidence says drives this violence. This includes working to instil gender equity in areas we live and learn, such as workplaces and respectful relationships education in schools,” she said.
“It is pleasing that the Government’s 10 year plan outlines these elements of prevention as a crucial components of any approach to end the epidemic rates of violence against women.”
“To ensure stakeholders, both locally and nationally, are working in a consistent evidence-based approach to prevent violence against women and their children,Our Watch is enthusiastic about working with the Government to co-design its Primary Prevention Strategy.
“Gender equality is the heart of the solution to ending violence against women; we are excited that the Government’s first Gender Equality Strategy will be released next week.
“We also look forward to learning more about the Prevention Agency highlighted in the 10-year plan, and how Our Watch, as the national organisation to prevent violence against women and their children, can work collaboratively with the new state agency” said Ms Barry.
