Responding to the Australian Labor Party’s announcement of a $660+ million package to address violence against women, Our Watch Chief Executive Officer, Patty Kinnersly, says:

"Today's commitment from the ALP, including a record amount for primary prevention, is an important milestone in sustaining the ongoing bi-partisan support needed to address Australia’s national crisis of violence against women.

"A commitment of this magnitude will allow Our Watch and other organisations to continue challenging the structures, norms and practices that perpetuate gender inequality and drive violence against women and their children and provide much needed response and support services to women experiencing violence.

"We know it will take generations to create a ‘new normal’ in which women and men, girls and boys can enjoy equality, and live free from violence. We also know we can achieve this, by working together across the community and with strong, ongoing support from our politicians."

NOTES TO EDITORS:
Our Watch leads Australia's work to stop violence against women and their children before it starts. The organisation was created to drive nationwide change in the structures, norms and practices that lead to violence against women and children.

In response to the Fourth Action Plan government consultation, Our Watch submitted a response proposing 16 actions to be taken and recommended four principles to underpin the plan.

The 16 actions proposed by Our Watch in the Fourth Action Plan submission included:

  • the establishment of National Primary Prevention Hub;

  • commitment to a National Primary Prevention Monitoring Framework;

  • the development of a Second National Plan to Reduce Violence Against Women and their Children (to follow on from the existing National Plan, due to end in 2022).

The four principles Our Watch recommended to underpin the Fourth Action Plan, were:

  • Embed funding models and modalities that facilitate sustainability and impact

  • Embed a strengths-based partnership approach into the 4AP

  • Investing in prevention and response together

  • Taking an intersectional approach to prevention
